The FBI has now charged 7 people and brought down the Megaupload website on piracy charges. The battle continues. In response, the Department of Justice website was attacked and brought down with a DDoS attack. I admit that I get a chuckle when I read this stuff. It’s like cowboys and Indians. reminds me of the old lady burning her books and house in Fahrenheit 451.
Soon, folks are going to resort to storing information on disks and leaving them in geocache style drops to be discovered or shared. The internet has simply grown too big for us and we just don’t know how to handle it. It challenges business models that companies aren’t ready to accept. And while I am not advocating stealing, I do call responsibilities to both sides of the fence. Here we have media companies pumping out advertisements to people, that effectively say, “you need this product… your life will improve once you get this”. And when folks cannot afford to purchase that product… they steal it. But, what if there was no perceived value to the media that was being sold? What if we decided that free media had more value?
Can we decide that for ourselves?
