After my last post I grabbed some crayons and got to work on my own 15-22. Using the TactiCrayola method of filling the stamped lettering in with crayon wax, I enhanced the look of the rifle. I am quite please with the results. The whole process took about 20-30 minutes. I used two crayons and then rubbed Hoppe’s 9 gun oil on the lettering. I did not color in the “caliber” stamp. Something just didn’t seem right about it. Hey Mom, look, I colored in the lines!

But with any good tactical rifle, one soon realizes that the upgrade bug will bite and take hold.

Why upgrade if it’s so awesome to start with? Simple… because you can. And honestly there are some upgrades that add to the comfort of the rifle. Not all upgrades have to be very expensive either.

TactiCrayola – This is nothing more than some crayons and some time to enhance the stamped lettering and logos on the weapon with a crayon for a more refined, “professional”, true AR look. Check out the YouTube Videos on this project.

TactiCrayola Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxSvZyW8APg

TactiCrayola Part 2 -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgbDzyzNTpE

Hogue Overmolded Grip – This $15 upgrade is by far one of, if not the best upgrade for your 15-22. I went from the standard AR-15 grip, which IMO is crap. For my hands it was too “short”. I added this grip and the rifle instantly felt like and extension of my hand. Pure comfort. Available from MidwayUSA.com.

Rail Covers – The 15-22, being all polymer, still has rails that can be a bit rough on the hands. Invest in some Tapco rail covers for your rifle. Do not spend money on the more expensive packages. The Tapco covers are excellent. You’ll receive 5, 6.5″ covers for $13, if your order from MidwayUSA.com.

Foregrip – Adding an angled or vertical forgrip (your preference) can enhance the stability of your weapon as you hold it.

Optics – The sky’s the limit in this area. However I personally cannot justify a $500 optic on a $400 firearm. But that’s not to say that it’s not wicked cool to do so. I’ve read that due to the lack of recoil on a .22LR, that optics designed for airsoft or paintball guns will work well. I personally have installed a BSA scope on mine and I like it. Red Dots are all the rage on this rifle according to the internet.

Back in November we published an article about the topic of a “home group“. Today I came across this article on the APN site and thought to share it as it is exactly what I was talking about back in November, but in better detail.

The concept of a settlement or a small village or any other real life establishment of social engagement is all but forbidden today. Our kids rarely talk on the phone and blur the lines between their online and offline lives. They are… we are losing the art of social interaction. We’ve crafted a world that seemingly needs nothing, on the surface. But as soon as any disruption happens. They are screwed.

Now is the time to build on self-reliance and get to know your resources.

Over time, our society has increasingly encouraged distrust of strangers and discouraged direct social contact. A divided society is easier to control. Most of today’s society struggles to find common ground with each other on a personal basis. Who can blame them? Our technology and “Me-ism” has effectively discouraged personal interaction.

National attention to the topic of prepping can be a good thing. And honestly I think that while some media outlets portray preppers as “extremist” or even “fringe citizens”… the attention is still cause for others to pay attention and think about their own preparedness. As this is a movement that is positive in nature is is about self-reliance.

And if anything, preppers are people who are preparing to be less of a burden on whatever emergency services are available during a disaster, leaving more for those who really need it.
