Back in November we published an article about the topic of a “home group“. Today I came across this article on the APN site and thought to share it as it is exactly what I was talking about back in November, but in better detail.

The concept of a settlement or a small village or any other real life establishment of social engagement is all but forbidden today. Our kids rarely talk on the phone and blur the lines between their online and offline lives. They are… we are losing the art of social interaction. We’ve crafted a world that seemingly needs nothing, on the surface. But as soon as any disruption happens. They are screwed.

Now is the time to build on self-reliance and get to know your resources.

Over time, our society has increasingly encouraged distrust of strangers and discouraged direct social contact. A divided society is easier to control. Most of today’s society struggles to find common ground with each other on a personal basis. Who can blame them? Our technology and “Me-ism” has effectively discouraged personal interaction.

As I’ve researched shelters and small homes, I have inevitably come across the tiny house movement. Tiny homes are just that, TINY! They are usually 300-700ft homes that are suitable for a small family or a single person. Looking at such a home on the outside, it seems to be too small. But upon further inspection they are actually really great homes that have everything that one needs to live. What’s even better is that they are so inexpensive overall, that one can be had for about $20k. An average home on today’s market cost at least 8 times that amount. So consider a small piece of land (an acre) that could support two or three of these homes. You could then support a couple of families. And what is more, is that they could all live and only have to split the taxes on the land.

If you do not know your neighbors, you should start now. Beyond who is friendly and who is not, you’ll want to identify which neighbors have which skills and access to what resources. If you yourself are or live near a nurse or a CNA with medical training, their skill-set will be valuable when municipal medical services are not available. When you begin sharing your resources before a disaster situation, you establish a working relationship/friendship and reduce the chance of  “disaster fatigue”, which can result in hostility when the time comes.
